These species are members of the Fagaceae or oak family. Chrysolepis chrysophylla is a broad-leaved, evergreen tree or shrub that may reach 150 feet in height but typically develops into smaller trees. Another species within this genus, C. sempervirens, is an evergreen shrub that typically reaches 3 to 5 feet. Both species are wind pollinated and are found mainly on the Pacific Coast but can also be found on gentle slopes in the surrounding states. These trees and shrubs provide a variety of nutrition through seeds and nuts to many small rodents and birds in the habitat.
